The Unnecessary Cost of Cancer

Recently, a 60 Minutes special about the cost of cancer drugs was rebroadcast. In the broadcast, cancer specialists from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center were profiled for their stance against the exorbitant cost of cancer drugs. Dr. Leonard Saltz, one of the chief specialists at the hospital and a leading authority on colon cancer, stated, "We're in a situation where a cancer diagnosis is one of the leading causes of personal bankruptcy . . . And remember that many of these drugs, most of them, don't replace everything else. They get added to it. And if you figure one drug costs $120,000 and the next drug's not going to cost less, you're at a quarter-million dollars in drug costs just to get started."

For Dr. Saltz, the revelation began in 2012, when the FDA approved the drug Zaltrap for advanced colon cancer. The results were similar to another drug, Avastin, but it cost over twice as much. Sloan Kettering ended up not using Zaltrap simply because the cost to patients would be too much.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. As Erin Havelreported for the Huffington Post, she is battling chronic myelogenous leukemia. With insurance, her chemotherapy pills cost $3,000/month in 2007. Since then, the cost has risen to a whopping $9,000/month.

There are several factors contributing to these issues. First, drug companies can charge whatever they want for their products. Medicare, in turn, must pay that price and nothing less. Also, commission from cancer drugs is "the single biggest source of income for private practice oncologists . . . They're the ones who buy them wholesale from the pharmaceutical companies, and sell them retail to their patients. The mark-up for Medicare patients is guaranteed by law: the average in the case of Zaltrap was six percent."

Another major factor is the power of pharmaceuticals in congressional lobbying. Pharma companies actually donate more to lobbying than even defence or big oil. From 2003-2012, the top 11 drug companies raked in $711.4 billion dollars in net profit. This number was expected to reach $1 trillion by 2014. This big money keeps the status quo going. According to an annual report released by the Canadian government’s Patented Medicine Prices Review Board, just from 2006-2011, that looks like a 8% price increase each year for prescription drugs in the US.

Previous comments from Life Choice on this phenomena can be viewed here.

We at Life Choice feel for the people; it is not enough to be stricken with cancer but then hit with the high costs of treatment further exasperates their stress; it is nothing short of robbery in 3 piece suit. So many natural treatments have been banned because cancer is big business with deep pockets and lobbied loyalty. Ethics fall right behind the debit and credit cards kept in the Bank of the Nonconsciousness.

DMF Melatonin has been successfully used in treating cancer; also, non-GMO soy isoflavones. And many other remedies over the years have come and gone and never to be returned.

Men's Health Week

For the first time ever, the Canadian Health Association and the Canadian Men's Health Foundation have teamed up to introduce Men's Health Week in Canada. This special focus runs from June 9-15. In recognition of this important emphasis, Life Choice would like to dedicate this newsletter to Men's Health Week.

CTV recently published a story where the impact of men's poor health decisions was measured in annual financial cost. This was the breakdown:
  • Smoking: $13 billion
  • Excess weight: $11.9 billion
  • Alcohol consumption: $7.6 billion
  • Physical inactivity: $4.4 billion
This adds to a cost of $36.9 billion per year, and these four factors alone contribute to 40 health conditions. The effects of these choices also spiral out, affecting men's partners and communities. In fact, the study found that 45% of women over 65 are widows. If men addressed these 4 key issues, up to 70% of the health care costs associated with them could be avoided.

The Canadian Health Association has highlighted 5 main ways men can monitor themselves to stay healthy:
  1. Be aware of testicular cancer. In addition to regular self-checking, try our Healing Male caps and Fiery Male for a natural testosterone boost. Zinc Picolinate is also great for prostate health.
  2. Monitor for high blood pressure. L-Arginine is very beneficial for heart health and blood pressure.
  3. Look out for high cholesterol. Smoking increases the potential for cholesterol problems. Kava has shown promise in preventing the development of lung cancer from smoking.
  4. Know the signs of Type II diabetes (thirst, exhaustion, and dramatic weight change). If your blood sugar levels are out of control, use Vanadyl Sulfate for diabetes control and prevention.
  5. While the Canadian Health Association recommends immunization as the 5th step to health, Life Choice would instead promote a strong immune system built naturally.

Male Health: Fertility, Libido and Testosterone: Men Increase Your Sex Drive!

Male Health: Fertility, Libido and Testosterone:
Men Increase Your Sex Drive!

On June 15, 2015 Preventdisease.com published an article titled Fertility and Father's Day. The article was written by Life Choice founder and CEO Eldon Dahl who possesses a doctorate in natural health.

The article focused on a study published in Vital Link that noted "that "in the last 50 years sperm levels have declined from 113 million/mL in 1940 to 66 million/mL in 1990." The article cited  many reasons for this decline: "an increase in environmental estrogen's, coming in contact with glyphosate and high fat foods."

However, the article also goes on to state that proper "supplementation can help offset these issues"; Life Choice's Fiery Male,is one such product.

Fiery Male is a completely natural formula designed for men, balancing hormones, raising testosterone and in turn increasing libido.

We have combined 16 scientifically researched ingredients in this formula to safely balance the male, these ingredients work synergistically, meaning each ingredient complements the other for absorption.  The overall effects when combined will allow a consistent absorption that will not let you down.

ABOUT THE INGREDIENTS:

Panax Ginseng Root Scientific studies have validated many of the traditional uses attributed to Panax ginseng, including its use as a male sexual stimulant.

Royal Jelly Royal Jelly is considered one of the most potent sources of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals with nature. Rich in all the B vitamins, especially pantothenic acid, which promotes fertility and healthy reproduction. Research has shown its importance in rejuvenating sex glands, increased sperm count and sexual function in both men and women.

The herb Tribulus Terrestris has been used for centuries as a tonic treating genito-urinary troubles, and prescribed in the treatment of impotence.  Tests have shown testosterone levels increased by approximately 30%, when taken over a 5 day period.
Fiery Male 725mg, 90 V's
Oat Bran – Avena Sativa supports prostate health in a natural way, it has been found helpful in reducing an enlarged prostate gland when used in conjunction with a healthy diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle.

The herb Epimedium or commonly known as Horny Goat Weed has been used extensively for its pro-sexual effects; it is not so much regarded as a fertility nutrient, but as a sexual stimulant.  Studies done with rats and goats revealed, the frequency of copulation increases significantly when the herb was consumed.

The amino acid L-Arginine is converted to nitric oxide, regarded as one of the most important pro-sexual compounds-essential for having and maintaining an erection.  It is also a very important vasodilator, increasing blood flow and improving cardiovascular health.

The herb Saw Palmetto may help as an anti-estrogenic agent, maintaining testosterone levels, also beneficial for the prostate.

Zinc has been shown to be essential for testosterone and sperm production, considered by many to be an important nutrient for a healthy prostate.

Damiana stimulates muscular contractions of the intestinal tract and brings oxygen to the genital area.  It is an energy tonic, a remedy for sexual and hormonal problems, ''a sexuality tonic''.

B-6 is used for its ability to help nutrients absorb properly, it also offers many other health benefits.

Folic Acid considered a brain food, helps with depression and anxiety.

Other ingredients are Maca, Mucuna Pruriens, Potassium, Inositol and Vitamin B12

It is recommended to take 4 capsules per day, with food.  Not to be taken by adolescence, those under medical care, or if you have any pre-existing health conditions.

This is no ordinary formula, so don't expect to see ordinary results.

Fertility and Father's Day

For men who are struggling with infertility, Father's Day can be a bittersweet experience.

A recent study published in Vital Link noted that in the last 50 years, sperm levels have declined from 113 million/mL in 1940 to 66 million/mL in 1990. The researchers concluded that this is likely due to the increase of environmental estrogens, oxidative stress, and STIs.

Estrogens have become more prevalent in the environment due to the increased use of oral contraceptives; estrogen leaves the body through urination, but it is often not removed in waste treatment, and is then redeposited in tap water. Some herbicides and pesticides, as well as phthalates, can also harm sperm production. BPA can also inhibit androgens. BPA exposure contributed to a 4x greater risk of inhibited sperm motility.

Also, avoid glyphosate. Multiple papers on rodent studies have indicated disruption of the male reproductive system by glyphosate, used in the herbicide Roundup. Acute treatment of 60-day-old male Sprague-Dawley rats to Roundup® caused a marked increase in aromatase mRNA in testicular tissue,[56] likely reflecting an increase in production due to suppression of the activity of aromatase (CYP 19), accompanied by abnormal sperm morphology. Aromatase participates in both hormone synthesis and metabolism. It is an important enzyme in testes that converts testosterone to estrogen, thus regulating the balance of sex hormones. In similar studies, consequences for sperm included a decline in sperm volume and concentration, as well as a decline in semen initial fructose and osmolality.

High fat foods can also be detrimental to sperm health. Similarly, trans-fat consumption is related to lower semen parameters, including volume.

Still, the article pointed out that supplementation can help offset these issues. Folic acid (found in our P5P) and Zinc can improve motility, antioxidants such as CoQ10 (found in our Neurotransmitter Support) can help with sperm concentration and motility, and Vitamin C can help sperm quality overall. Additionally, Fiery Male is helpful for building testosterone and increasing libido.

Father's Day

Both current fathers and would-be fathers can agree that health is important. What are some steps fathers can take to be in good health to prepare for kids, and to keep up with the kids once they arrive?
  1. Avoid glyphosate. A studypublished in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicinefound that low dose exposure to Roundup for 30 minutes led to Sertoli cell death in rat testis. Interestingly, the dosage used in the study was 10x more diluted than the recommended dose for herbicide usage, and was still toxic to humans. In similar studies, consequences for sperm included a decline in sperm volume and concentration, as well as a decline in semen initial fructose and osmolality.
  2. Eat organic. On a related note, one of the biggest steps you can take to avoid glyphosate is to eat organic food. Just last year, astudy in the British Journal of Nutrition analyzed 343 studies comparing organic food to conventional food. The study found organic food is higher in antioxidants, lower in cadmium, and also lower in pesticide residues.
  3. Exercise. The Annals of Internal Medicine found that much of the erectile dysfunction in older men occurs in those who are healthy. However, modifiable health behaviours like physical activity and leanness reduced the risk for erectile dysfunction in men without prostate cancer. Anotherstudy measured Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in young men before and after a sprinting exercise. DHT was elevated after sprinting.
  4. Take high quality supplements. Life Choice has several formulations that can help keep men healthy: Fiery Male, Recovery H Cream, L-Arginine, Healing Male capsules, and Zinc Picolinate. To learn more about what these products can provide, tune in to the Father's Day webinar coming up on Wednesday, June 10.
