All About EDTA

Mercury, lead, and other heavy metals are often called cumulative poisons because in normal circumstances, they come out of the body more slowly than they are absorbed from the environment. The older one is, the more heavy metals are accumulated.

The first step in removing heavy metals is called mineral antagonism. In this process, the body is flooded with nutritional minerals like zinc, selenium and magnesium that compete for the same deposit sites and dislodge the heavy metals.

The problem with mineral antagonism alone is that it only dislodges heavy metals, which means they will become lodged elsewhere. You may take selenium and dislodge some mercury stored in your brain, but this mercury then circulates through the blood and becomes deposited in your liver. In this constant recirculation, only a tiny trickle of that mercury will actually leave the body. To solve this re-depositing problem, you need to take a chelating agent such as EDTA. EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is an amino acid compound, and a powerful chelating agent - meaning it attaches to plaque buildup and heavy metals and removes them naturally from the body. EDTA forms six bonds to heavy metals - two from nitrogen atoms in amino groups and four from oxygen atoms in carboxyl groups. EDTA will chemically bind with the heavy metal, keep it in circulation, and prevent it from being re-deposited. Once bound to the chelating agent, the kidneys are able to excrete the mercury out of the body. Life Choice CLAW-OCHMB uses EDTA, along with other chelators that enhance EDTA's effectiveness.

Industrial Grade EDTA is used in batteries and for other practical purposes. Food Grade EDTA is used to protect us to some degree from harmful metals that find their way into the foods we eat. The sodium and calcium salts of EDTA are common sequestrants in many kinds of foods and beverages.

Pharmaceutical Grade EDTA is used in the best chelation products for its primary function, that of removing unwanted metals (in particular Calcium, Mercury, Lead, Cadmium & Arsenic) from the body's organs and cardiovascular system. Normally high dosage levels of EDTA are not recommended for oral applications since less than 5% of EDTA is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, but in low dosage oral forms help release lodged toxic metals, such as lead, and mercury.

Benefits of detoxing with EDTA may include:
  • Stronger immune system
  • Better GABA balance in the brain--leading to lessened depression/anxiety and better mental clarity
  • Fighting free radicals (protecting cell membranes, DNA, enzyme systems, and lipoproteins)
  • Resuscitated mitochondria (the loss of mitochondrial function is thought to be one of the key elements of aging)
  • Better longevity and success rate than bypass surgery

Try Life Choice CLAW-OCHMB to utilize all the benefits EDTA has to offer!

Professional Therapeutic Medicine: What Does It Really Mean? Support, Recognition, Value And Acceptance

Professional, Therapeutic Medicine: What Does It Really Mean?
Support, Recognition, Value And Acceptance

(Calgary, AB) What does the phrase "professional, therapeutic medicine" really mean? In a recent article published on June 20, 2014 in Preventdisease.com,  Dr. Eldon Dahl   (ND), a trained naturopath, and the owner and founder of Life Choice, set out to define that phrase in an article that he wrote titled The-Difference:Professional Therapeutic Medicine.

In that article he defined the term "professional" as meaning that the people involved in creating a product "have put in the time and research" to ensure that every little detail associated with that particular product meets the highest of standards.

When defining the word "therapeutic" he defined it as an undertaking or "practice designed for healing;" an act or an action that "will improve your quality of life."

Finally, when defining the term "medicine" he defined it as an action that one initiates to "help treat an illness."

At Life Choice We Understand!

At Life Choice we understand the significance of the phrase "professional, therapeutic medicine" For over 25 years naturopath doctors and health food outlets have placed their trust in the Life Choice brand.

The Canadian College of Natural Medicines (CCNM) has also placed their trust in the Life Choice brand and Dr. Eldon Dahl, ND.

It goes without saying that if professionals in the industry trust the Life Choice brand, then so can you. In fact, it is Life Choice's commitment to product quality that has many customers voluntarily stepping forward to comment or provide a testimonial on the therapeutic results that they have experienced after taking Life Choice natural health supplements.

Why Life Choice and Not A Product From A Pharmaceutical Manufacturer?

The question that we hear most often at Life Choice is why a Life Choice natural health supplement or formulation? Why not a product from a major pharmaceutical company? Aren't they both the same? Don't they do the same thing?

If we are discussing pain management for example, the answer is a resounding NO!

Take for example,  the difference between a Life Choice natural health product(s) and a Over the Counter (OTC) or Prescription painkiller manufactured by a pharmaceutical company - the difference between the two are very pronounced. .

Why Life Choice and Not Another Brand Of Natural Supplements?

The other question that we hear at head office is why Life Choice? Why not another natural health brand?

The answer is simple, "Product Quality"

As Dr. Dahl discussed in previous Life Choice newsletters and posts; [unfortunately] there is a substantial difference in the way that the Life Choice brand approached product quality and many of our competitors.

A Final Comment

For over 25 years Life Choice has been supplying the natural health industry with high quality natural supplements. During that time, the company has gained the trust and loyalty of naturopath doctors and health food outlets across Canada and beyond.

For individuals and their families, the Life Choice brand is a natural supplement that they can trust. - It is professional, therapeutic medicine that is all natural, clinically tested,  government licensed and approved.

It is a brand of which it's owner and founder Dr. Eldon Dahl is very proud. It is a brand in which Dr. Dahl was once overheard saying "I would rather quit from the industry [natural health] than compromise on product quality."

Why Wild Yam Isn't Enough

Recently, one of the top selling wild yam creams in Canada, Heartland Natural Wild Yam Moisturizing Cream, was recalled. The reason? Health Canada conducted tests and discovered that the cream contained the prescription ingredient progesterone.

View the recall here.

What made this recall interesting were the implications. If wild yam could naturally convert to progesterone in the body, why would the product also contain prescription progesterone?

While the diosgenin found in wild yam created quite a stir in the 1990s as a cure for menopausal disorders and other symptoms of aging in women, the plant itself has no proven hormonal action, nor have any studies shown it to be effective in treating hormone related disorders. It is true that diosgenin can be converted into steroidal compounds, which are then used in the chemical synthesis of progesterone, but this happens in a laboratory—not in the human body. There is essentially no scientific evidence of wild yam's effectiveness in treating either menopausal symptoms or osteoporosis. Although many individuals claim relief of symptoms such as vaginal dryness with the use of progesterone creams, some of which contain an extract of Dioscorea villosa, no well-designed studies have evaluated these creams. Moreover, many products that claim to contain natural progesterone actually contain synthetic medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA).

Soy has been a dietary staple in Asian countries for centuries. And, perhaps it's no coincidence that rates of heart disease, cancer and other serious diseases happen to be much lower among Asian cultures. Soy undoubtedly has a good deal of nutritional value. This member of the legume family contains abundant amounts of protein, fiber, lecithin and B vitamins.

Soy is also a rich source of various isoflavones, a class of phytoestrogens—plant-derived compounds with estrogen-like activity that mimic this hormone in the body. In addition to reducing symptoms such as hot flashes, soy contains powerful anticancer phytochemicals. Genistein and daidzein, the two most important soy isoflavones, are converted in the body to phytoestrogens, balancing high estrogen levels. These phytoestrogens can also block estrogen receptors in certain hormone-dependent tissues such as the breast and uterus, helping to protect against cancer. Non-GMO soy deserves special attention because of these well-researched properties. Most of the positive research has been on fermented soy foods, not soy isoflavone supplements (although research is ongoing on supplements as well). Soy as a food and supplement should be consumed on a regular basis for hormone balancing. If you are sensitive to soy products, isolated soy isoflavone supplements are often tolerated.

In America:
  • The American Institute of Cancer Research found that women who have had breast cancer can safely consume soyfoods.
  • For breast cancer survivors who want a more plant-based diet, with less meat and more protein, soy is a safe and healthy alternative.
In Canada:
  • Researchers undertook a two-year clinical trial evaluating the health effects of soy isoflavones, both alone and combined with exercise.
  • Over 300 postmenopausal women were studied.
  • Soy was found to be effective for improving leg strength, and soy either alone or with exercise also lowered LDL-cholesterol by 6%.
  • Soy also reduced adverse menopausal symptoms, such as breast tenderness, decreased concentration, depression, fatigue, hot flashes, insomnia, numbness, vaginal dryness and itching, night sweats, subjective weight gain, migraines, anxiety, irritability, and changes in bleeding patterns.
  • Also, soy isoflavone supplementation did not affect two measures of safety, endometrial thickness and mammographic density, which are both assessed to determine the risk of endometrial and breast cancer, respectively. These results agree with a large dataset showing isoflavones don’t affect these markers.
Very few women actually need hormone therapy. For example, a woman who has had her ovaries surgically removed will need hormones. Women who are at high risk or already have osteoporosis may also benefit from hormones, as well as a small percentage of women who do not have these risk factors but experience severe menopausal symptoms may need hormones. Many, if not most, of these situations can be avoided by providing your body with the right nutrients throughout your life. In these cases, seek the help of a knowledgeable doctor on the use of natural hormones–that is to say, hormones that are identical to the ones in your body, not the same as horse urine-derived hormones.

A high fiber diet, exercise, avoidance of environmental xenoestrogens such as pesticides and relaxation all contribute to hormonal balance.

Life Choice Progest Liposome Cream is an excellent option to help balance the female hormones during the different phases of the cycles of life, from menstruation to menopause. With non-GMO soy isoflavones, clover leaf extract, and chastetree berry, Progest Liposome Cream is a great natural alternative for natural hormone balance.

Balanced Female And Progest Lipsome Cream:
(non-GMO Soy isolfavones vs. Wild Yam Cream)

It is Dr. Dahl's understanding of the human body and his attention to detail that gives the Life Choice brand its therapeutic and medicinal values. Take for example, Life Choice's Balanced Female and Progest Lipsome Cream, two Life Choice products that help women treat menopausal disorder.

Balanced Female Balanced Female 90 V's

Progest Lipsome Cream

Life Choice ProGest Balanced Skin Cream is an excellent option to help balance the female hormones during the different phases of the cycles of life, from menstruation to menopause. The silky, luxurious texture of this all-natural cream makes “taking your medicine” a delight more

Why Non GMO Soy isolavones?

It was under the direction, guidance and insistance of Dr. Dahl that both products be especially formulated to use non-GMO Soy isolfavones. Dr. Dahl understood the importance of Soy [and Soy isoflavones] and its ability to ease menopausal symptoms and to provide hormone support during the menopause transition.

In fact, it was Dr. Dahl who during the initial years of research and formulation insisted that no other substance or interacting substances; which could create the false impression of producing similar therapeutic effects as non-GMO Soy isoflavones, be introduced into these new formulations (i.e.wild yam).

In the end, it was Dr. Dahl's  knowledge and expertise that allowed him the ability to design a series of natural formulations that helped women treat their menopausal symptoms; professionalism that was ultimately back up by independent scientific research.

Biodentical Hormones: Why Are They Still Controversial?

Bioidentical Hormones: Why Are They Still Controversial?

Wild Yam

Wild yam is a plant. It contains a chemical, diosgenin, which can be made in the laboratory into various steroids, such as estrogen and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). The root and the bulb of the plant are used as a source of diosgenin, which is prepared as an “extract,” a liquid that contains concentrated diosgenin.

There are over 600 species of wild yam. Some species are grown specifically as a source of diosgenin for laboratories to use in making steroids. These species are generally not eaten due to a bitter flavor. Only about 12 of the 600 species are considered edible.

Diosgenin or wild yam is often promoted as a “natural alterative” to estrogen therapy, so you will see it used for estrogen replacement therapy,
vaginal dryness in older women, PMS (premenstrual syndrome), menstrual cramps, weak bones (osteoporosis), increasing energy and sexual drive in men and women, and breast enlargement. Wild yam does seem to have some estrogen-like activity, but it is not actually converted into estrogen in the body. It takes a laboratory to do that.

Similarly, you will also see wild yam and diosgenin promoted as a “natural DHEA.” This is because in the laboratory DHEA is made from diosgenin, but this chemical reaction is not believed to occur in the human body. So taking wild yam extract will not increase DHEA levels in people. Individuals who are interested in taking DHEA should avoid wild yam products labeled as "natural DHEA."

Wild yam is also used for treating a disorder of the
intestines called diverticulosis, gallbladder pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and for increasing energy.

Some women apply wild yam creams to the
skin to reduce menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes.

Wild yam cream
Wild yam cream is said to have hormone balancing properties, assisting with menopausal symptoms like hot flushes. Some manufacturers claim that their product either contains progesterone or can increase progesterone levels in the body. This is incorrect as products containing progesterone are only available on prescription. Similarly, the human body is not capable of converting the ingredients in wild yam (eg.,diosgenin) to progesterone.
Evidence – There is currently no quality evidence to support the use of wild yam cream in relieving menopausal symptoms (12).
