Vermont Makes It Official:
New Law Passed That Requires That All GMO Food Must Now Be Labeled.

(Calgary, AB) On April 26, 2014 Preventdisease.com published an article titled Vermont Law Makes It Official GMO Food Must Be Labeled. The article written by  Natasha Longo focused on the recent legislation that was passed by the Vermont legislature that required "foods that contain genetically-modified food to be labeled, the first "no-strings-attached" legislation passed in the United States."

Advocates of the new law, as well as Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin and State Legislative Speaker Shap Smith all believe that the new law will benefit the people of the State of Vermont because it puts into place a mechanism that  "ensure that Vermonters will know what is in their food".

According to the Speaker "every Vermonter has a right to know what is in their food. Genetically engineered foods potentially pose risks to human health and the environment". He continued, "I am proud to be the first state in the nation to recognize that people deserve to know whether the food they consume is genetically modified or engineered."

According to Rebecca Spector of the Center For Food Safety, one of the driving forces behind the legislation "the people and legislators of Vermont have taken a tremendous step forward in allowing their citizens to know what is in their food. All families deserve this simple right to know,”

GMO's or genetically engineered food has been a major health concern for many health professionals and scientist. In a recent post on this site,  we quoted Dr. David Suzuki who said, "the safety of GMO foods is unproven and a growing body of research connects these foods with health concerns and environmental damage. One problem is that we don't know the unintended consequences of genetically engineered or genetically modified (GM) foods."

Dr. Eldon Dahl (ND) a trained naturopath and the owner and founder of Life Choice, has been a  proponent of GMO labelling in Canada for many years. His concern about GMO's echos those of Dr. Suzuki, "As we all know, science has ventured into dangerous territory with the proliferation of GMO foods. The science has not been proven safe. There is no documented safety evidence of GMO use that spans several generations."

He continued, "At Life Choice all of our Life Choice TM products are certified as being non-GMO; we use only non-GMO raw materials in all of formulations. To ensure the public and for transparency purposes, we list this fact, on every single Life Choice label."

In respect to Vermont and their new law he said, "As far as Vermont is concerned we agree with the state of Vermont, the people need to know what is in their food and in their food supplements."
