How To Prevent Cognitive Decline As You Age

As our population ages, more and more people in Canada and the United States are going to be affected by dementia and alzheimer's. The question that has to be asked is, "..is there something that we can do to help prevent it or at least delay its arrival?"

Given how fast the average age of Americans (Canadians) is rising and how much the risk of dementia leaps with advancing years, finding anything that delays cognitive decline, even a little, would be an enormous value.

Marilyn Albert, director of cognitive neuroscience as John Hopkins University has conducted studies on 'what maintains good brain health.' In light of our aging population and the senility trend that is taking place, it should come as no surprise, that people like Marilyn and others, are looking for links between lifestyle and a healthier brain.

Researchers such as Marilyn have discovered that one of the top ways to take care of your mind, it turns out, is to make sure your cardiovascular system is performing well (and there's nothing like physical activity to promote good cardio health). In fact, all other things being equal, people who engage in a wide variety of physical activities—like walking and biking and dancing and swimming—seem to be better protected against cognitive decline than those who don't.

Another area to prevent cognitive decline is healthy eating. Eat at least five servings of fruit and vegetables a day, consume fish once or twice a week. Cutting down on the amount of trans and saturated fat in your diet can also delay the onset of dementia or Alzheimer's..

Another area to prevent cognitive decline is mental stimulation. Several studies have found that people who regularly engage in mentally challenging activities—like reading, doing crossword puzzles or playing chess—seem less likely to develop dementia later in life.

Finally, a healthy mind means good overall health. If you smoke quite, get your cholesterol levels and blood pressure checked regularly, If you have diabetes, do everything you can to keep it under control.

As we age, a healthy brain  needs both physical exercise and mental stimulation  The two go hand in hand. A healthy body contributes to a healthy mind. When both are in sync the rewards to your cognitive health is invaluable.

Alzheimer's: A Pandemic That Will Cost 200 Billion Dollars In The U.S.A.

Alzheimer's disease is a fatal, progressive and degenerative disease that destroys brain cells. It is the most common form of dementia in Canada and the United States

A series of news articles suggest that  Alzheimer's and Dementia will soon be a pandemic, a recent article in Time Magazine states that the disease will bankrupt the entire U.S. Medicare program. Canada will not be lagging far behind.

According to the latest date released by the Alzheimer's Association, this disease will cost the U.S. an estimated 200 billion in 2012. It will affect every family.

What is this disease? What causes it? And is there anything that can be done to prevent it?

Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging. Symptoms include having difficulty remembering things, making decisions and performing everyday activities. These changes can affect the way a person feels and acts.

When a person has Alzheimer's disease, several physical changes occur in their brain. Brain cells shrink - or disappear - and are replaced by dense, irregularly shaped spots called plaques. Threadlike tangles will also develop within existing brain cells, and will eventually choke and destroy healthy cells. As brain cells degenerate and die, the brain shrinks in some regions – a process that will continue over time.

As the disease advances and affects different areas of the brain, various abilities become impaired resulting in changes to abilities and/or behavior. Once an ability is lost, it is not known to return. (However, research is now suggesting that some relearning may be possible).

We do not yet know what causes Alzheimer's disease but researchers have identified risk factors associated with it.

The most important risk factor is aging. A minimum age needs to be reached for Alzheimer's disease to develop.  People do not get the disease in their teenage years or even in their 20s.

There is no doubt that genetics play a role in the disease. Yet only a small percentage of cases is associated with the specific genes that cause the inherited form of the disease.

Research is being done on other factors such as existing diseases or conditions that the person may have, infections, toxins in the environment, education level, alcohol and tobacco use, diet and exercise.

Focus On Quality Insulates Natural Health Manufacturer From Chinese Contamination Scandal

Media Release (May 7, 2012)
Immediate Release

CALGARY - According to a report from Xinhuanet News on April 26, 2012 Chinese authorities in Hebei Province have shut down 82 unlicensed drug capsule workshops because of a contamination scandal that was exposed earlier in the month.

The story originally broke on April 15, 2012, when Chinese Central Television (CCTV) reported that 13 commonly prescribed drugs had been packed into capsules made with industrial gelatin which contains a much greater amount of chromium than edible gelatin.

Chromium can be toxic and carcinogenic to humans if ingested in large amounts. When asked to comment on chromium toxicity and the possibility of it being carcinogenic, Life Choice CEO, Dr. Eldon Dahl, commented “High amounts of chromium in its elemental form can be very toxic, this is why Life Choice only uses chromium formulated with picolinic acid, chromium picolinate is not toxic when taken in prescribed dosages.”

When asked to comment on these events, Dr.Dahl, commented "I am not surprised by these closures. Time and time again, we see instances where Chinese manufacturers use contaminated or inferior materials in their production processes. Why should nutraceuticals or pharmaceuticals be immune from these developments?

Asked if Life Choice, a North American manufacturer of natural supplements, is in any way affected by these closures, Dr.Dahl replied, "Absolutely not. All our raw materials are of the purest possible pharmaceutical grade, and they are manufactured by suppliers in Japan (pre-Fukushima nuclear disaster), the USA, or Europe that have a proven record for consistently high standards and quality." He continued, "We encapsulate our formulas in vegetarian capsules, and not in the less expensive animal-source gelatin capsules, because the quality of every component is paramount."

When asked if he knows of any Canadian, American or European company in his industry who may be directly affected by these closures? He replied, "I am not sure. My educated guess is that there may be a few. Some companies are always looking at different ways to cut corners and get a deal."

To rectify the problem, Chinese authorities have decided to build an industrial park for drug capsule businesses only. These businesses will be under strict quality supervision to ensure the healthy development of the industry.

When asked to comment on the Chinese plan to build an industrial park, Dr. Dahl replied, "I hope that they are successful. I hope that they succeed. However, only time will tell."
