Drinking Water: Prevents Heart Attacks

Studies have consistently shown that drinking water is good for you. It is an excellent replacement for pop, energy drinks, coffee and sugary fruit juices. However, current research seems to suggest that drinking water might also help reduce your risk of a heart attack.

In 2002, the American Journal of Medical Epidemiology published a study that found that people who drink more that five or more glasses of plain water a day have a much lower risk of fatal coronary heart disease compared to those who drink less than two glasses per day.

The study seems to suggest that risk factors that are normally associated with coronary heart disease, like blood viscosity, appear to increase with dehydration. The study also seems to indicated that hydration of the body may be more effective than other suggested preventative measures like weight loss or exercise.
It appears that the benefits in question only occur when the fluid in question is plain drinking water. Drinking other types of liquids such as coffee, pop or energy drinks will not act as a substitute.

A Serious Note About Heart Attacks: You should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.

You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let’s be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive.

Heart Attack Information: A heart attack occurs when the blood flow to a part of the heart is suddenly and permanently cut off, causing permanent damage to the heart muscle. Chest pain is typically severe and does not go away with rest or medicine that is effective with angina. Symptoms may indicate your heart is in danger many months or years before a heart attack occurs. Persistent symptoms, such as shortness of breath, nausea, great fatigue, angina/chest pain, fainting spells and gas-like discomfort, are red flags.

Visit Your Dentist: Reduce Your Chances Of A Heart Attack Or Stroke

A study put forward by Taiwanese researchers suggest that your annual trip to the dentist twice a year could actually save your life. There research indicated that by simply having regular teeth cleanings you could reduce your chances of having a heart attack or stroke by up to 24 percent.

According to the author of the study Zu - Yin Chen M.D., "regular cleanings help kill inflammation-causing bacteria that lead to plaque buildup in the the blood vessels

Dr. Thomas Gerber an American Heart Association (AHA) spokesman and professor of medicine and radiology at the Mayo Clinic stated that "Periodontal or gum heath, as a risk factor for heart attacks and strokes, has been looked at several times over the past 10 years. Some prior studies found a relationship between gum disease and heart or other disease, whereas, others didn't."

Research has yet to determine the exact mechanism of how gum disease may be linked to heart disease and stroke. However, one thought is that poor dental hygiene leads to an overgrowth of oral bacteria. These organisms, fairly benign in the mouth, can get into the bloodstream through the gum's and, once there, they can clump on blood vessel walls and grow into plaques that clog arteries and lead to heart attacks and strokes. Moreover, because these bacteria are foreign to the body, once they infiltrate the bloodstream, blood vessels think they are being attacked and try to kill them, just as they would an infection. This results in inflammation and swelling that narrows blood vessels and prevents adequate blood flow to vital organs like the brain and heart.

In addition to regular dental checkups, Life Choice offers two natural products that can help you and your family with their oral hygiene: Colloidal Silver and Opti Cal/Mag.

Having Problems Sleeping? Tips For A Good Nights Rest

Are you getting the quality of sleep that you deserve? If you are not, you are not alone. Millions of people across Canada and the United States lack good quality sleep. There are many reasons why many of us lay awake at night tossing and turning, only to wake up the next morning feeling tired and fatigued.

At Life Choice, we believe that good quality sleep is important not only your physical well being but for your mental state as well. If you are having problems sleeping, here are a few suggestions from Life Choice to make your next night(s) sleep more relaxing.

Schedule your sleep. Set yourself a "bedtime," like you would for a child. Going to bed and getting up at roughly the same time each night and day can help to normalize your sleep habits and encourage sleepiness and wakefulness at reasonable hours. And just like story time or lullabies prepare children to sleep, follow your own bedtime rituals to set the "sleepy mood."

Save your bed for sleep. This means not using the bed as a desk or a place to lounge and watch television. And this also means not remaining in bed if you struggle to fall asleep. If you do not fall asleep within 20 minutes, get up and do something else until you are sleepy enough.

Change your sleep position. Are you a side sleeper, a belly-dozer, or do you dream best on your back? Certain positions may be better depending on your health and physical condition. Sleeping on your back may increase your risk of snoring. Sleeping on your stomach can lead to neck and back pain. To prevent pain, try to sleep in a position that lets you keep the natural curve in your back.

Strategically time your meals and workouts. Regular physical activity and a healthy diet support good sleep. But lying down too soon after eating can cause heartburn or indigestion. And exercise kick-starts your mind and muscles and increases your heart rate and body temperature - all of which work against sleep. If possible, schedule exercise in the morning or early afternoon hours.

Set up your bedroom for maximum sleep potential. Your bedroom environment can affect your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. For one thing, it's easier to get to sleep when your bedroom is on the cooler side. That's because a cooler climate - between 12 to 24 degrees Celsius (54 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit) - is similar to the climate inside of your body when you sleep. Also, keep your bedroom as dark as possible. Bright light can interfere with your brain's release of the sleep-inducing hormone called melatonin.

If you are still having difficulty sleeping then a good natural supplement to take is melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone produced in the brain that sends your body a natural "time-to-sleep" signal. But things like jet lag and shift work can disturb this natural sleep-wake cycle. Taking a supplement of melatonin may help the body get back into its normal sleep-wake cycle. Speak to your doctor before taking melatonin and be sure that the product you buy has a natural health product (NHP) number. This will ensure that the product is of high quality.

Life Choice offers a variety of different natural melatonin supplements that can help you relax and sleep better at night http://www.life-choice.net/category/RelaxationandR/Relaxation-and-Relief

All of Life Choice's natural melatonin supplements are of the highest quality and each possess a government issued natural health product number (NHP).

Helpful hints for Parents: Caring For Your Child's Baby Teeth

Until recently baby teeth were not viewed as important because adult teeth eventually replace them. What we now know is that these primary teeth play a crucial role in guiding adult teeth into position.

Here are some helpful ideas for preventing decay in primary teeth:

1) Brush them twice a day. Allowing food particles to stay on teeth for any length of time increases the risk of decay.

2) Always brush after the evening meal so bits of food do not linger there overnight

3) Never let your baby go to sleep wit a bottle of juice or milk. Constant immersion increases the risk of decay. If necessary, a bottle of water is a much better idea.

4) Sweets between meals increases exposure to decay producing acids. A smarter approach is to offer sweets at the end of the meal. Of course, no sweets at all is your best bet. Fresh fruit is a great substitute for candy. The proverbial "sweet tooth" is developed at a very early age.

5) Avoid serving to much fruit juice. It encourages tooth decay and, on the whole is not as healthy for babies as it once was thought to be.
