We need a strong immune system to protect our health, and yet it is under constant attack--just knowing this fact is a source of stress, which impacts our immune system. Environmental toxins damage our immune system; even cleaning our clothes can be a source of toxins. Fabric softeners, dryer sheets, and laundry detergents contain hazardous chemicals, including two known carcinogens--acetaldehyde and benzene.

Fuel For Your Force Field

Maintaining a healthy immune system first requires a healthy diet and exercise. How-ever,we must also support our endocrine system because it works with the immune system. If the endocrine system, especially the thyroid and adrenal glands, and the liver are not working in harmony, it would be as if we had lost the compass in our search for immune support.

During the cold and flu season, when our endocrine and immune systems have to work overtime, the very moment my family feels under attack, we hit the bottles--and not the type you're thinking of. I am a true believer in homeopathic remedies. My family travels everywhere with homeopathic colloidal silver, an FDA-approved disinfectant,using it as a nasal spray and in the mouth for sore throats.

Supplements and Supports

Whether travelling in a crowded plane, breathing recycled air, or attending a sporting event with “Sneezy” and the other toxic dwarfs, my family has a favourite immune-boosting recipe that we have been using for years (see Recipe Box below).

RECIPE to Boost Your System
50 drops echinacea
20 drops goldenseal (anti-inflammatory and astringent)
20 drops bee propolis (antiseptic, antifungal, antiviral)
3 drops oil of oregano (antiviral and antiparasitic)
1 teaspoon (5 mL) calcium ascorbate (buffered vitamin C)
1 capsule P5P Complex

In addition to this formulation, I recommend reseeding your gut with a probiotic complex. Yogurt can serve this purpose. However, when I want to strengthen my immune system, I prefer knowing the potency, so I take a 10 billion human-strain probiotic capsule. The shelf-stable form works best with my family because once refrigerated, it's easy to forget all about it.


To support the thyroid gland, my family takes a homeopathic solution called Thyroid Support, which also supports the liver. Human growth hormone (HGH) also supports the immune system, but unlike injectable HGH, which can have negative side effects, my family uses a homeopathic version called HGH+, in which minute amounts of the active ingredient are potentized for a safe and effective remedy.

The Tryptophan Controversy
 

Tryptophan is one of the 20 standard amino acids, as well as an essential amino acid in the human diet. It cannot be synthesized by the human body and therefore must be part of our diet. It has also been villainized by big pharma as it competes with prescription sedatives.

In 1989, there was a fatal outbreak of eosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS). EMS is a rare autoimmune disease that causes fever, numbness, and rashes; it also affects the muscles, arms and legs. In severe cases, EMS can cause death. This outbreak of EMS was traced back to contamination from a new tryptophan processing method that one Japanese manufacturer had implemented. (Life Choice was and is not associated with this manufacturer.) In years prior, tryptophan users never reported any EMS-related symptoms; only those who were unfortunate enough to receive the "bad batch" from 1989 reported health issues. Several of those who developed EMS from the contaminated tryptophan sued the Japanese manufacturer; in fact, some even attempted to further their cause by claiming that their illness and pain continued on after the symptoms were gone. This uproar resulted in a FDA mandate banning the sale of tryptophan in the US. The media, of course, published the "health risks" of tryptophan, as well, which only fueled the fires of panic.

How the Evidence Stacks Up

As Braverman points out in his book, The Healing Nutrients Within, many of those who complained of persisting EMS issues were not screened for muscle-aching disorders, and may have had pre-existing health conditions that affected how their bodies metabolized tryptophan in the first place. Research in recent years has revealed several disorders related to "defective tryptophan metabolism and elevated tryptophan blood levels." (Braverman, p. 54) Yet, no patients with these conditions were diagnosed with EMS, which means that tryptophan alone could not have caused it. In addition, the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition studied amino acid supplementation and concluded that it is safe.

Where Tryptophan Stands Today

In the US, as of 1996, tryptophan can be obtained via prescription.In Canada, Health Canada has granted an EN number (159012) to Life Choice's L-Tryptophan. Did you know that an active social life for a senior (65+) has as much of a benefit as an exercise program?

According to Thomas Glass, an associated professor at the Harvard School of Public Health “social and productive activities that involve little or no enhancement of physical fitness lower the risks of all causes of death as much as exercise. In his research conclusions Glass wrote...” among elders who were less physically active, those who were more socially active and productive, lived longer than those who were least sociable and productive.”

According to Glass...”Keeping busy and social evoke changes in the brain that protect against cognitive decline.” His research seemed to conclude that “the odds of experiencing cognitive decline were approximately 2x as great as those reporting no social ties.”

By simply getting together with an individual or with a group of people at a church, in a restaurant or at a seniors drop in centre to play cards, board games or just to chat etc...Seniors are engaging in the art of socialization, a process that: increases their ability to focus; improves their memory; reduces their stress; enhances their immune system and improves their self esteem.

Dress in layers – The number one rule to keep your children warm this winter is to dress them in layers. By dressing them in layers, you are able to insulate them against the cold outside air, by trapping the warmer air against their body.

An additional benefit is that you are able to monitor their body temperature by removing or adding layers if you feel that that they are becoming too cold or to warm.

Loose clothing – Choose clothes for your children that are loose fitting. These types of clothes not only insulate your child better, but they allow for more movement of bodily fluids within your child’s body.

Avoid the use of cotton – Cotton absorbs your child’s perspiration (sweat) better than most other fabrics. If next to your child’s skin, it will end up making their skin colder

Use wool – Wool will keep your child warm even if it becomes wet. As a fabric, it breathes better than most other materials, thus, allowing your child’s sweat to evaporate more easily. This means that your child will not become cold when they become less active.

If wool is unavailable – If wool is unavailable then other materials like silk, polyester or nylon are good substitutes next to their skin. Again, avoid cotton.

Keep their hands warm – Wool gloves covered by a nylon shell works the best for active children.

Keep their head warm – Your child will lose more body heat through their head than any other part of their body. Have your child wear a toque or a hat to trap their body heat.

Keep their feet warm – Your child’s feet are in constant contact with the cold ground. Have then wear boots that are well insulted. Again, layer their socks. Wool socks work the best

Keep their neck warm - The less skin your child has exposed to the cold the better. In addition, by covering up their neck you prevent body heat from escaping from their jacket into the environment.

Minimize the amount of sweating that occurs – This is a tough one. Especially for parents with active children who want to go outside to play in the snow.

However, as a parent you should note; that if your child starts to get warm, they will soon start to sweat. When they sweat, they will get wet, and when they get wet, they will get cold. If you find that you child is beginning to sweat it is time to begin radiating their body heat and begin cooling them down.  Your first choice would be to remove their mittens; your second choice would be to remove their toque or hat. Either way, you are allowing their body heat to escape, thus allowing the body the ability cool itself down.

Their jacket – Choosing a jacket for child is very important. A jacket or coat with down insulation works the best. Make sure that their jacket or coat has a hood because this will prevent their body heat from escaping through their head. In addition, make sure that all of the jackets openings have string or Velcro seals. Again, this will prevent their body heat from escaping into the outside environment through the openings.
